Mo in Kent Report 19 Oct 2009 14:36

Thank you Jean and Sallie, for confirming my thoughts about the Prefabs.
Saucy Jean,I did know the origins of the word Bungalow,But I did check it out in my Dictionary, before I wrote it down. I didn't want our Jean taking the mickey out of me,she's such a meany to me sometimes.lol.
I am on early today,as I have got darts again tonight, and I like to have my say,ha ha .
Huia,is your house made from wood,or prefabricated material. Either way
it was a home made out of your love for it,and a lot of hard work.
Huia you have so many good memories,of your life with Phil, surround yourself with photo's of all the good times. The man you visit,is a shell that
Phil used to inhabit, and it must be so heartbreaking for you.
If he is managing without his teeth,I would tend to leave him as he is.
Having new teeth made, could cause so many problems with him not realising what is happening to him.
Take heart my love,be strong, for yourself and your children.
Well my friends,I will say cheerio for now. Take care one and all.Love Moxx

Prefabs (I think) were mainly of a white material, actually it looked like asbestos but as some are still standing (although not many) I guess it couldn't have been. They were flat rooved and mostly single story, although I have see some two storey houses that looked like prefabs (pre-fabricated houses). They were nothing like your house sounds Huia and practically went up overnight. I had a friend who lived in one in the early 60s and in the late 60s/early 70s we had an estate of them over the back of our house in Essex. They were council housing and, as somebody has said, put up as a temporary measure to replace houses either bombed or not built because of the war. They were neat and cosy and not unlike the mobile home bungalows we have on sites these days here in UK.

Incidentally I am home again now. The house was freezing when we got home and is taking ages to warm up.

Sallie Report 19 Oct 2009 17:44

Hello Girls

Ann, we use to have the same trouble when we got back from visiting the family in Wales, the house use to take ages to get warm, especially after we had a new gas boiler. For some reason this one isn't as good as the old one we had, the old boiler was far more efficient. You sound as though you had a good weekend with your grandchildren. I read Daff's thread, your granddaughter looks as though she is taking after you, making cards and scrapping. Clever little girl!

Mo, I thought that you were very knowledgeable when you told us about where the word bungalow had come from. I knew that the word had come from India, but that was all. Hope you'll win at darts tonight, good luck, I'll be thinking about you.

Huia, it must have been very hard for you to see Phil as he was when you went to the hospital. Just try and look forward to things that you love and enjoy doing yourself, you now know that Phil is safe and well looked after.
At least you have peace of mind. No I wouldn't call your house a prefab Huia, as Ann said the prefabs put up were very quickly after the war, I think it was a cheap way to re-house and house people that needed houses.

Jean, how are you today? I expect you are busy getting organised for your holiday, and getting your kitchen done. Have you all agreed on what colour
paint you're going to have?

I popped up town today, had a few things to sort out, so had to go, because from tomorrow until Sunday all the roads will be closed to traffic through the centre of town. From Thursday to Saturday night, it's the Ilkeston Charter Fair, which has taken place for over seven hundred years. Obviously very different to what the Fair is like in this day and age.
I haven't been to it for a few years now, too many people. Jennie and Michael always go the three nights, so Michael is bringing me some hot chestnuts, so that I can taste them. Ever since Debbie and Mo mentioned them on this thread, I've wanted to try some.

Still, haven't heard anything from Liz, Grace and Sue, hope they are all okay.Thinking of Debbie, Marie and Marilyn.

Take care everyone, speak to you soon.

Best wishes,

Love, Sallie.xxx

Huia Report 19 Oct 2009 19:02

Actually, the reason my relative called this house a prefab is probably because it is clad in fibrolite - a type of asbestos made material, but I dont think it has the dangerous blue asbestos fibres in it. I certainly hope it doesnt. We have the flat fibrolite on the basement but a fancy type on the main part of the house. We have painted it a dark green although the basic colour was pale grey, almost white.

Off for my day in town later on today, with choir practice tonight. I must remember to take my eyedrops and eye ointment with me. My eyes are still a bit bloodshot a week after I started using the ointment, but at least they are not burning, just a little itchy in the corner when they are due for the next treatment. I hope it clears up before the long weekend. Next weekend is Labour Weekend and I am going down to Rotorua on the Friday for a Choral festival and will be returning on the Tuesday so dont worry if I am missing for 5 days. But I am still here for 3 more days.

Huia.

Sallie Report 19 Oct 2009 19:59

Huia, pleased to know that your eyes are getting better, hope that they will be right by the time you go Rotorua. Enjoy your day in town and choir practice later on. Speak to you before you go away.

Huia, I do so sympathise with you and your itchy eyes. At my Son's they have two lovely cats, but since we have been without a cat I seem to be allergic to them and soon start with sneezing like mad and really itchy eyes.

Your house in an unpainted state would look much like our prefabs then, the same colour anyway.

Sallie, the fair sounds fun, I would love it, love anything like that.
Jean you have the photos, glad you liked them.

Mo hope the darts went well!

Hello All, I have read the last 3 pages, I am not going to comment on prefabricated Homes. My cottage is all one level with 2 Bedrooms My bedroom has a walk in robe and I have an alcove for my computer and Desk, I also have a bookcase with a filing cabnet attached to the bookcase I have a very nice bathroom with a shower that stands straight onto the tiled floor so later on if necessary a wheeled shower chair could be just rolled in and out. There are no steps except on a small verandah off the lounge room that takes you to the outside but it is rarley used. The kitchen dining room and lounge are one large room .The laundry is off the kitchen and on 3 sides of the house it is all paved and very even. I also have a glassed in patio off my bedroom which gets the morning Sun.
I am very lucky, we planned it this way so that i should be able to take care of myself for many years, God Willing.
Sebastian starts his HSC to-morrow with his first English exam he is doing the highest english so will have several exams on this subject.
I was pleased to see you are all well . Jean I think cream & coffee for your kitchen sounds nice.
Love to you all , Marie .

We are still trying colours, but coffee and cream is favourite at the moment, I will send you a photo when it is finished...how are you eyes now, I have just been to the Glaucoma clinic and all o.k. for the next six months....take care .

Hello Marie,

I agree with Jean, your home does sound lovely, just the kind of place we need to live in. I wish now, that we had gone for a bungalow instead of extending this house--my trouble is, I let my heart rule my head, and then later regret it. Please wish Sebastian good luck in his exams from us.
Well, I'm going to do some more of the Scrapbook I am making now, so that I can get it done for my cousin's birthday.

Take care. Love, Sallie.xx

Hi girls, how are we all tonight.
It's good to hear from you again Marie. The layout of your home sounds really nice,so spacious as well.
Good wishes for your grandsons exams.
Are the fires that were in Queensland out now, only I thought I saw something about it on the news.
I must ring my cousin over there. She said that when that bad dust storm
hit over there, her home was covered in red dust, inside and out,and that the horses in her paddock were also covered, and they had to wash them down, she said that it looked like mud as it was coming off.
Ann where abouts in Essex did you live. I was born and bred in Ilford.
We lost 4-2 last night Sallie, but we won the pairs 2-1. Where we were playing last night was close to home,so we walked there. It was quite cold when we left home, but coming back it was flipping freeeeezing.
I felt like my ears were going to drop off. It's no good,I am going to have to
find my hat. I put it away last March, and I cant remember where I put it.
Not long now Jean, till your holiday. Have you packed your suitcase yet?
Did you manage to decide what colour tiles you are going to have, with the coffee and cream paint.
Our youngest son has moved back home today, until he gets another job sorted out.
I really think that the licencing trade,is a bit of a dodgy business to be in at the moment.
And as he is on his own, most of the pubs want couples, and not single people.
I will be back later, just going to make a cup of tea. Love Mo xx

Sallie Report 20 Oct 2009 19:34

Hi All,

Mo, sorry that your team lost last night. Never mind, better luck next time.
So, you will have your youngest son at home for a little while, that will be nice Mo. Wish him all the best from both Alun and me, in finding a job.
I hope he'll find one very soon.

I've actually managed to get a bit of the Scrapbook done today, so I seem to be getting there, but very slowly. Just hope that I will continue to be able to concentrate on doing it.
It's gone colder here, and also had some rain, the same kind of weather that we have this time of year, Fair weather as it is called, in this area. Just hope it will stay dry for the Fair.

Ann, how is your hubby's food today? He really needs the doctor to have a look at it. Is he able to drive with it---or do you have to do the driving?

Huia, how are your eyes today? I hope they are better, especially as you are going away with the choir. I expect you are busy packing ready to go.

Jean, earlier on I went on 'do crafts' website, they have a lot of ideas for Scrapbook pages on there, it was very good. Have you been on it at all?

Well, I'm going to try and do another scrap page now, so speak to you soon. Take care!

Mo, we lived in Great Baddow from 1968 to 1973.
Sorry your team lost last night. Get your winter woolies out girl!!!

Sallie, OH's foot is no better, no worse. He can walk on it and can drive, the worst time for it hurting is in bed and when he first gets up, or when he gets up after sitting for a while. I THINK I have persuaded him that he should get it checked out. I know what it is, such a performance to make an appointment, have to phone first thing in the morning and these dark mornings we often don't see 'first thing'. Still tomorrow we have to see the nurse for our flu jab - we were away for the mass one last Friday - so he will see what the receptionist says about making an appointment.

Morning all, another wet miserable day so far... but heh, at least I woke up...lol... Sallie I had a look, thanks, if you google free scrapbook ideas lots of sites come up, the ones from the U.S.A. seem quite fussy with lots of bits on them, still if it suits the one making it thats fine....

Hello Girls,

How is everyone today? Hope you are all okay.

Ann, I'm sorry that your OH's foot isn't better. Hopefully, you managed to make an appointment today, when you went for your flu jabs.
Our surgery is the same, we have to ring first thing, the problem is there are so many trying to get through, that the line is constantly engaged, and by the time we get through all the appointments have gone. It drives me mad.

Jean, thanks for that, I'll try it later on, after we've had our dinner. I noticed that some of the U.S.A. scrap pages are very fussy, as you say alright if you like that kind of thing. Sorry to hear that you are sometimes still having pains in your legs--I hope that they will soon be a lot better. Were you able to get your tiles and paint today?

Mo, how are you and Roly today? I hope all is well with you both. With Jean talking about Christmas, it's started me thinking that I've hardly done anything towards it. I usually buy some presents through the year, as and when, I see something. There are a few people that I don't know what to get for them. I suppose I'll get there in the end!

I posted on Chat for the first time today. It is 43 years today since the Aberfan disaster. So felt that I had to add to the thread. It is only about 10 miles from where Alun and I were born and brought up--I can remember some men volunteers from the town going there to help. One of the teachers at the school was also from the same town as us, and we knew her quite well, luckily she survived. It was a terrible tradgedy and loss of life, and it still affects people today.

Well, going to do the dinner now, so I'll speak to you all later.

Love, Sallie.xxx

Jean hope the pains in your legs are better than they were this morning.

Sallie No didn't manage to make an appointment as all the afternoon ones were full. Had the flu jabs though.

Just had my car serviced and new tyres fitted (well one more to come tomorrow, we had wanted the new spare on but apparently it is a slightly different size and a get you home only tyre. 7000 mile service, 4 new tyres, oil change (oil + filter), new door release cable (apparently the other one was broken) and £1.50 to dispose of old tyres. £272 so far plus tyre tomorrow another £47 + VAT, over £300. That is this months DSS pension gone!!

Evening all. well we finally got all the paint and all the tiles, nothing like our first try....lol.... but nicer ...so I shall be sending you all piccies of the finished project...may be Christmas before we get everything back...
I struggled last night with legs,Ann, I went to bed early and always find it hard to sleep, so I think I dont need a lot of sleep, I recall being like that years ago, J would get up for work, and I had painted all the woodwork once, and baked lots of pies for the freezer,. what a strange woman...lol...

we had our car serviced and we didnt have new tyres but the bill was huge, how does one check that all the work had been done...

Mo, have you been gadding out today? do tell....

love to all Jean xx

Good evening everyone.
Hello Jean my lovely. I have not been gadding about,I'm sorry to say.
We popped up to town this morning, but it was to cold to hang about, plus it was pouring it down.
I am pleased that you have managed to get your paint, and tiles, and that they are what you wanted.
Never mind Jean,it will all be lovely in time for christmas.
Did I tell you that the order for my doors, had been lost,so now we have another three week wait.
Ann,these days having a car is something of a luxury isn't it. It never seems to stop does it,what with road tax, insurance, petrol etc etc.
But I know we would be lost without ours.
My goodness Sallie,is it really 43 years since the Aberfan disaster. Doesn't time fly. It was such a tragedy, and should never be forgotten. All the young children, god rest their souls, lost to this world.
Oh by the way Jean,I was not
playing on Monday night in the game that was lost. But my partner and I won our pairs game,so keep backing me.
No blood spilt just yet,at home here. I am not taking sides between son and Roly.
Love to you all. Mo xxx

Hello all.

Sallie, I have tended to buy things for Christmas when I see them, then put them away somewhere and forget about them or cant remember where they are! I havent bought anything for next Christmas, in fact the way I feel at the moment I am not sure I want to face Christmas. It will be my first as a virtual widow, or even a real one. That thought now has me moisturising my keyboard, better mop it up.

Huia.
